It's that time again! Generator Gawl- why you should watch it!

When I was a kid, I use to choose what anime series to buy on DVD by watching the trailers on discs I owned, and how much I enjoyed the theme song. Seriously, that was it, and to this day I beleive a good show will always have a good theme song. This lead me to buy Generator Gawl on dvd, I believe it was the third anime series I bought after Evangelion and Escaflowne. I think I wrapped them up, and gave them to myself for Christmas.
From right to left Koji, Gawl, Ryo.
Generator Gawl was directed by Seiji Mizushima of Fullmetal Alchemist Fame, and hilariously the lead Gawl is voiced by Vic Mininogna in the dub. The series tells the story of three young men from the future, who head to the past when they suspect the future they live in was manipulated through time travel. Arriving later than they expected, they must fight to stop the event that created their future. No, there isn't any Skynet involved.
Gawl Kudo- The blue haired pretty boy. He has super strength, and can Generate- turn into a powerful fighting creature.  He's kind of an idiot, but his heart's in the right place. Simon from Gurren Lagann totally ripped off his design, down the the haramaki.
Koji Suzuki - a pretty girl who's a genius. Wait, no he's a dude, never mind.Kaname is his future (past?) self.
Ryo- a sensitive blond man who reminds me of Quatre. He's responsible for creating Generators.  He loses his memories and becomes Tsakuma Nekasa.
Masami- the token female who wears a can on her head. Gawl and his brows live with her.
Ryuko Saito- the big bad.
Natsume- She is kawaii and has pink hair. Created in a lab by Ryuko Saito, and her eggs are used to create the people of the future, including our pretty boy trio.
After arriving, Gawl is forced to fight a Generator sent from the future, and he destroys it by tearing out it's core (Just like Evangelion!). They sign up for the local school, and move in with our heroine Masami, who already had an unfortunate run in with Gawl, and believes him to be a stalker. On the first day they meet Natsume, and Ryuko Saito. As the story rolls along we learn the Academy they attend, Ohju will become the basis for the Auge, the company that essentially rules the future of the world. They will be backed by the discovery of include cells by Takuma Nakasa, which unlock our bodies greatest mysteries, and allow Auge to rule the world.
As we roll along, we get wacky high school hijinks, Super Sentai like fights mixed with Evangelion, with Gawl always ripping out the core. The chemistry between Gawl and Masami is great, and reminiscent of two youngsters who love each other, but can never admit it. It also involves time travel, which I fucking love so much! It contains plot twists and secret identities too! Natsume is eventually sent to kill Gawl after all the other Generators are defeated, but she kills herself instead of hurting her friend. This triggers Gawl Generating into an even stronger form, known as Rage Gawl. It's even stronger and can fly! Holy poop!
Now it's plot twist time! It's revealed they the gang was destined to travel back in time! Gawl is defeated by Ryuko Saito, ripping out his core. This creates a temporal energy that can be used to remake the world.Ryuko's assistant is revealed to be Koji, and Takuma Nekasa is Ryo (without his memories other than include cells), both were sent back from this very event by Gawl, to give them another chance at winning. Future Koji and Takuma both Generate, but are easily killed by Ryuko, however Koji, Masami and Ryo are able to reach Gawl, and tell him he has the power to remake the world as he saw fit. He chooses their current world without the bad stuff. Congratulations Gawl!
Generator Gawl is not without it's flaws. The Dub is almost completely different from the sub, to the point where they're almost two different stories. I really don't know why they did this, but both versions are solid. The animation is dated, it reeks of QUALITY, even in the opening. This series was not meant to be viewed on an HDTV. Still, if you can make it through all this, you'll find a rewarding Sci-fi action comedy. Generator Gawl- 9/10. Now maybe the theme song will convince you as it did me. It's only 13 episodes!
